Miller 4th at tennis tourney; Hammel named All-HCAC

Anderson University’s Holly Miller finished fourth on Sunday to lead the Ravens at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis individual championships at the West Indy Raquet Club in Indianapolis.

Miller defeated Sarah Wilkins of Bluffton in the first round of the No. 5 singles flight by scores of 6-1, 6-2 before falling to Franklin’s Cristy Tucker (6-1, 6-0) and Jordan Cullen of Mt. St. Joseph in the third-place game 8-2.

Other singles finishers for the Ravens were No. 1 Alex Hammel (5th), No. 2 Jessie Rigby (7th), No. 3 Becky Curtis (7th), No. 4 Katie Porter (5th), No. 6 Nicole Newell (6th).

In doubles play, No. 1 Hammel/Rigby were fifth, No. 2 Miller/Curtis were sixth and No. 3 Emily Thompson/Rachel Robertson were 7th.

Hammel was also named to the All-HCAC team for the 2008 season. The freshman from Anderson played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Ravens this season.

Huntington beats women’s tennis team in finale

The Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to Huntington College 7-2 on Tuesday at the AU Tennis Courts.

Alex Hammel and Jessie Rigby won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, for the Ravens. Hammel won by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) while Rigby was triumpant by a tally of 6-2, 6-2.

AU (2-11, 2-6 HCAC) travels to Indianapolis for the HCAC Individual Championships at the West Indy Raquet Club on Oct. 11-12.

Ravens split two HCAC women’s tennis matches

The Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Transylvania 8-1, but rebounded to defeat Defiance College 9-0 on Friday at the AU Tennis Courts.In the first match against the Pioneers, the Ravens won at No. 1 doubles as Alex Hammel and Jessie Rigby teamed up to defeat Sarah Ridley and Stephanie Townsend 8-6.

In the nightcap, Hammel and Rigby again won at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-2. Hammel and Rigby also won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as well as Becky Curtis (No. 3), Katie Porter (No. 4), Holly Miller (No. 5) and Nicole Newell (No. 6).

Curtis and Miller teamed up to win No. 2 doubles while Newell and Emily Thompson combined to triumph at No. 3 doubles.

AU (2-11, 2-6 HCAC) hosts Huntington on Tuesday in the regular season finale at 4 p.m.

Goshen handles women’s tennis team 8-1

The Anderson University women’s tennis team lost to Goshen College 8-1 on Thursday in Goshen.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Hammel and Jessie Rigby accounted for the Ravens’ point in the match, winning over Rachel Lanctot and Summer Hasan by a score of 9-7.

AU (1-10, 1-5 HCAC) hosts Transylvania and Defiance on Friday at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.

Women’s tennis team beats Bluffton for 1st win

The Anderson University women’s tennis team defeated Bluffton 6-3, but lost to Franklin 9-0 in a pair of HCAC contests on Saturday in Bluffton, Ohio.

Against Bluffton, Alex Hammel (No. 1), Becky Curtis (No. 3) and Katie Porter (No. 4) won in singles and all three doubles teams were also victorious. Hammel and Jessie Rigby combined to win at No. 1 (8-4) while Curtis and Porter won at No. 2 (8-4) and the duo of Nicole Newell/Emily Thompson were victorious at No. 3 (9-7).

AU (1-7, 1-5 HCAC) hosts Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Women’s tennis team drops pair of HCAC contests

The Anderson University women’s tennis team dropped a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matches on Saturday at the AU Tennis Courts.

Rose-Hulman defeated AU 8-1 in the first match and Manchester knocked off the Ravens by the same 8-1 score in the finale.

Against Rose-Hulman, Becky Curtis defeated Megan Chann in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2). The doubles team of Alex Hammel/Jessie Rigby lost 9-7 at No. 1.

Against Manchester, Hammel beat Milli Ridoutt at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-2. Hammel and Rigby lost at No. 1 doubles again by a score of 9-7.

AU (0-3, 0-2 HCAC) travels to Mt. St. Joseph next Saturday to play the Lions and Hanover in another conference tri-match.

The Anderson University women’s tennis team lost its first dual match of the season to rival Taylor, losing 5-0 on Thursday in Upland.

Competing for the Ravens were Alex Hammel (No. 1), Jessie Rigby (No. 2), Becky Curtis (No. 3), Kaite Porter (No. 4), Holly Miller (No. 5), Nicole Newell (No. 6) and Rachel Robertson (No. 3 doubles). Three matches were canceled due to rain.

AU (0-1) hosts Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foes Rose-Hulman (noon) and Manchester (3 p.m.) on Saturday at the AU Tennis Courts.
